OUR LEGACY
The MSC Artisan Academy was established in 2010, in response to the general decline in the quality and supply of artisan training that has over time; resulted in a critical shortage of high level technical skills in South Africa. The MSC Artisan Academy aims to positively contribute towards increasing the general standard of artisanship in South Africa.
We work with closely industry to create entry pathways for school leavers into the workplace by offering artisan related training programmes and qualifications that meet the technical skills demands of industry. We use cutting edge technology to deliver these programmes and qualifications and focus on ensuring student success and work readiness, by valuing quality and not quantity.
The MSC Artisan Academy was born out of years of working with industry to find solutions to the skills crisis in South Africa. The Academy has been built around bringing some of these solutions to life and we differentiate ourselves from other training institutions in three ways:
• By being able to understand and respond to the skills demands of industries, and ensuring that our students are adequately equipped to grasp the opportunities that exist in industry.
• By matching students to the most suitable programmes and the workplaces so that they have the best chance to succeed.
• By delivering our curriculum through a unique blended learning approaches to ensure optimal flexibility and best use of technology combining e-learning, face-to-face tutoring and practical application.
MSC Artisan Academy manages a demand and supply process bridging the skills that are needed in a particular industry, student preferences and ability to work in the target industry. MSC Artisan Academy actively engages industry partners to ensure upon completion of a training intervention, students have access to relevant workplaces for further development through Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
DELIVERY APPROACH (TRAINING METHODOLOGY)
All qualifications and skills courses at the academy consist of the following key components delivered in an integrated manner:
- Knowledge
- Practical Skills
- Applied Knowledge and Skills (Work Integrated Learning)

The integration of these components is synchronised through a block release approached based on the Dual Apprenticeship System.
MSC Artisan Academy adopts a “flipped learning” approach, delivering knowledge aspects of the curriculum through a combination of face-to face and digital learning, and practical project-based learning in the institutional workshop where trainees are being prepared for the challenges and demands of the work place.
All trainees are rotated to an accredited workplace (host company) for work-place based learning after completion of a block before starting with a new module.
MSC Artisan Academy’s delivery model seeks to optimally drive student success and work readiness. Our recruitment and selection processes are rigorous and aligned to the requirements of the companies and sectors concerned. Students are engaged in practical learning from the start and our teaching conditions simulate those that the students will face in industry, thus ensuring their readiness for smooth entry into the workplace.
